2-Chloroacrylonitrile CAS:920-37-6
2-Chloroacrylonitrile is mainly used industrially for the production of poly(2-chloroacrylonitrile) via radical polymerization. This polymer, also known as chloropolyvinylcyanide (CPVC), finds wide application as a thermoplastic. It is employed as tubing and pipe materials in harsh chemical environments due to its resistance to corrosion from acids, bases and organic solvents. CPVC has semi-crystalline properties and high heat deflection temperature, making it suitable for applications in hot water systems also. 2-Chloroacrylonitrile additionally serves as an important monomer unit in the preparation of various fluoropolymers through copolymerization. It is used to synthesize membrane materials, adhesives and coatings that exhibit excellent permeability and adhesion properties. In organic chemistry, this monomer acts as a building block in Diels-Alder reactions to furnish heterocyclic compounds with industrial significance. Its reactivity stems from the vinyl and nitrile substituents.
