2,4-Di-tert-butylphenol CAS:96-76-4
2,4-Di-tert-butylphenol is commonly used as a stabilizer in the plastics and polymers industry. The antioxidant properties of its phenolic structure help prevent degradation of polymers and plastics from heat, light and oxygen. It is frequently added to polymers like polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS) during processing and manufacturing to extend their longevity. In smaller quantities, 2,4-Di-tert-butylphenol can also be used as a polymerization inhibitor to prevent runaway polymerization reactions of acrylate esters and other ethylenically unsaturated monomers. It acts by trapping free radicals generated during the polymerization process. Pharmaceutical companies also employ 2,4-Di-tert-butylphenol as an antioxidant preservative in ointments, lotions and other drug formulations. Its stability helps increase the shelf life of medications and personal care products.
