Alpha-lipoic acid has been used in in vitro lipoylation studies and in the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC)-pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase (PDHK) functional assay. It has also been used to investigate its antioxidative effect on developing cerebellum of rats exposed to arsenic during postnatal period. The lipoic acid molecule is composed mainly of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and sulfur, and has strong reducing properties. It is an enzyme found in mitochondria and is absorbed into cells through the intestinal tract. It is both fat-soluble and water-soluble, so it can be used throughout the body to reach any cellular area, providing the body with comprehensive effects.Alpha-lipoic acid is the most efficient and safe antioxidant known, known as the "universal antioxidant", its antioxidant capacity is 400 times that of vitamin C and E, and far superior to the popular grape seeds, green tea and other ingredients.
