Progesterone EP can be taken in the second half of the menstrual cycle to balance hormones and reduce premenstrual symptoms. It also helps relieve menopausal hot flashes when combined with estrogen. For this use, start with 100-200mg nightly escalating as needed. Short term use may reduce breast tenderness. For contraceptive purposes, 200-400mg is taken nightly from day 16 through day 26 of the cycle with backup contraception. Applied vaginally, 100-200mg suppositories can treat dryness during menopause. Effects are seen within 4-6 weeks with minimal side effects, like fatigue or sleepiness. Individualize use based on symptoms and have progesterone levels tested if taking long term.
